A lot changed in December The high school girls basketball landscape has changed significantly since the season began a month ago. Only two teams remain undefeated in classes A and B, as Millard West and Platteview, respectively, start January in the top spots. The overwhelming preseason favorite in Class C 1, Lincoln Christian, has already suffered a loss, upset by Bishop Neumann in the finals of the Neumann Holiday Tournament last week. Four time defending Class C 2 champion Crofton had its 57 game winning streak snapped by now No. 1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic. Then the Warriors suffered a second loss a week later, falling to South Dakota Class AA No. 3 Sioux Falls O'Gorman in the Pentagon Classic in Sioux Falls. The only preseason No. 1 team still in that position is Dundy County Stratton in Class D 1. But the Tigers, undefeated last year until the state championship game, lost on the opening weekend when Class C 1 ratings contender Kimball (6 0) beat them 72 39 in the finals of the Kimball Invitational. Like three time defending state champion Pierce in Class C 1, reigning Class D 2 state champion Falls City Sacred Heart has also risen to the No. 1 spot on the strength of a 9 0 start and triumphs against four ranked teams Class D 2 No. 5 Sterling, Class D 1 No. 5 Friend, Class C 2 No. 6 Freeman and Class C 2 No. 4 Sutton. St. Mary's, the defending Class D 1 state champion, is right behind the Irish after dropping to Class D 2. Several Nebraska teams traveled across the country in recent weeks to compete in national tournaments. Fremont went 1 3 at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix just before Christmas. Omaha Concordia finished sixth in the nike wallpaper San Diego Turf 'N Slam last week, going 1 2. Travel difficulties limited South Sioux City to two games in the KSA Events Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Florida, last week, and the Cardinals split those two contests. Here's a look at the largest classes one month into the season: In the preseason, things looked as wide open as they ever have in this class. The results in December seemed to add validity to that point. Millard West stayed above the fray, winning the Metro Conference tourney and beating Millard South in the final. The teams meet again Thursday at Millard West. Papillion La Vista South, unranked in the preseason, delivered the first shock wave through Class A by winning the season opening Early Bird Challenge with victories against previous No. 3 and defending state champion Omaha Westside and No. 7 Fremont. After she scored 21 points in the win against Westside, the Titans were without Super State volleyball player Raegan LeGrand the next four games. LeGrand played briefly in the Titans' Metro tourney semifinal loss to Millard South and will likely see increased playing time in the their next three games at No. 3 Belleuve West on Tuesday, at home against Class B No. 5 Elkhorn South on Saturday and home against No. 2 Millard South on Jan. 12. The return of 5 foot 11 sophomore Payton Brotzki has been huge for Platteview. Brotzki tore an ACL in late December last year, but she's bounced back to average 27.4 points per game in eight outings. She's being recruited by a number of NCAA Division I schools. York saw its undefeated season and No. 1 ranking slip away with a first round loss to Elkhorn in the York Holiday Tournament, a game York led going into the fourth quarter. Waverly has wins against Gretna and Elkhorn, but also two heartbreaking losses to York in overtime and 34 33 to Norris when the Titans' Emma Areman hit three nike shoes jordan 13 free throws with .4 seconds left. The top four teams have distinguished themselves from the rest of the k-state nike shoes field. Kearney Catholic has had just one game closer than 10 points in its 9 0 start, including a 69 41 blowout of No. 6 Ord. This class will change when Minden junior all stater Taylor Kissinger comes back later this month from a broken right wrist (shooting hand). The 6 1 Kissinger was the top returning player in the state and has scholarship offers from a number of Power Five conference schools, including Nebraska.
