RIO HONDO LEAGUE TRACK Pons swept all three events last year, and it was also in the 800 meters last year where Pons got the toughest competition, again from Hoffman, who finished with a 2:00.14. Pons won the 1,600 (4:32.60) and the 3,200 (10:12.14) for the third time. With league finals over and done with, Pons concentrates on the road to CIF State and maybe Nike Nationals, but first is next week CIF Division 3 preliminaries at Estancia High in Orange County. four races to go (prelims, finals, Masters and State) I knew I wasn going to go as hard, Pons said. the 800 is one I really wanted to win. Pons, now the two time 800 meter league champion, thought his first lap was slow and noticed Hoffman took the lead. Pons strategy was to wait for the final 250 meters and make bigger strides in the backstretch, even if it wasn his first choice. win was bittersweet, Pons said, I cheated myself. I went in with the strategy of waiting it out and then making my move, while Hoffman came out strong right away. But I had to do that to win. In the backstretch I was thinking, I hope this kid isn as strong to out kick me because that was as fast as I could go. South Pasadena junior Blake Parson had quite a triumphant victory in the boys 110 meter hurdles, the kind of stuff movies are made of. He fell in Tuesday preliminaries after running neck and neck with teammate Ian Steele. He got up and finished third to qualify for finals, beating out the fourth place finisher by a mere .07 seconds. He trailed La Ca ada Brent Johnson but managed to edge him with a 15.99 to win his first league title. I fell I was just wondering if I was going to qualify for finals, Parson recalled. remembered how last year in one event a girl fell, but she didn get up and disqualified herself. I wasn going to let that happen. I wanted to at least finish the race. Parson went on to also win the 300 meter hurdles with a 41.66 mark. South Pasadena freshman Anika Renken pulled away from third in the final 100 meters to out pace the San Marino duo of Natalie Sanchez and Lindsay Miller to win with a time of 2:22.94. She went on to win the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:53.11. Temple City Steven Baroldi nike 4 flyknit won the boys pole vault with a mark of 13 feet and Temple City Michelle Tsui won the girls pole vault after clearing 10 feet. Temple City Shuno Yang, a sophomore, cleared 6 2 in the high jump to put pressure on La Ca ada Pierce Clark, who finished second. Shuno then wowed the crowd when he cleared 6 3 to win the event. Fellow senior Elizabeth Shehee won the girls shot put with a 36 7 mark. Blair Donell Wilson won the boys shot put with a 47 4. Monrovia won the boys and girls 4 meter relays. Camille Robertson ran anchor for the girls to lead the Wildcats to a 48.80 finish and Harris anchored the boys to win with a time of 44.10. Monrovia freshman Jazmine Robertson proved to be too fast in the 100 meters, beating teammate Skylar Buchanan (third, 13.11) and South Pasadena Samantha Amido (second, 13.09) to win with a time of 12.58. San Marino sophomore Omhunique Browne edged Monrovia senior Camille Robertson (26.06) to win the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.82, and Monrovia Osmund Boulingy out kicked teammate Dejuan Jones to win the 200 meter dash with a time of 42.50 to Jones 43.10 mark. Monrovia Kevin Scott won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.54. Monrovia sophomore Michael Harris left little doubt that the long jump was all his. In his first three attempts, Harris jumped considerably farther and went on to win the event with a mark of 21 6 1/2. I had been practicing to make big jumps like that, said Harris, who also competed in the nike shoes nordstrom rack 4 100 meter dash and triple jump.
